Stop giving me sympathy because i am disabled, give me an opportunity.

A few years ago i was working on a job and once my disability came to light i got more sympathy than opportunities to show my employer what i can do. When ever i made a mistake someone in the office pointed to the fact that i had a disability, they would say things like it is your eyes again. When other people in the office made mistakes they were told that they were learning from them. After that experience i was made to feel like i was lucky when i was offered a job and just had to deal with what was given to me. Talking to a lot of people with different disabilities, i have discovered that this is the story of so many people. They go to work and they are made to feel like they are lucky to be part of their team, every mistake they make is attributed to their disability and this hinders their learning.

I did not realise i had a disability till i was diagnosed with Nystagnus in 2009, before that my life seemed normal with a few strange things which did not seem to be right. Unlike a lot of children with this condition i did a lot of things like playing footballl, played Rugby up  to youth level. I clearly found ways of working round my disabilities over the years. However i found that some of  employers did not ask how i work round it and how i have done it over the years.  I found that some managers did not give me a chance to perform, to make mistakes like everyone else. I might be disabled but that has not weakened me but it has made a solution oriented person, i am always looking at ways i can solve problems. A disability does not take away ability to perform.  Frank
