Create Your Own Happiness

FrankIt was 2001, and in the month of July most parts of Zambia experienced a total eclipse of the sun. I remember the big build up to this historical event very well; the whole country was filled with excitement. Businesses in the tourism industry were filled with anticipation because a lot of people were going to descend on this tiny nation from all corners of the glob; this meant a lot of money for the tourism industry. I was ten years old and I never really understood what this was all about all I knew was that a very exciting event was going to take place. People prepared for this for almost two years, they made sure that they were in parts of the country that were going to have a total eclipse. The day of the eclipse arrived and the anticipation was there to see, after all this was the first eclipse in Zambia for over hundred years. My home town of Luanshya did not experience a total eclipse so my family and I watched it on television. I still did not know what to expect then our television went dark, all the adults were excited about the whole event, after about four minutes the sun came out and the whole event was over but people were excited that they had travelled a lot miles and paid a lotof money to be part of this event.

It took two years of preparations for this four minute event and everyone was so happy that they travelled long distances and paid a lot of money to be part of this event. If you think about, darkness covers the light every day, no one ever goes outside and cheer. The sun comes out every morning, no one goes outside and cheer. However for this very short even which was demonstrating what happens everyday people went out and cheered. I never got why everyone was happy that day but as I grew up this event taught me that happiness is a collection of everyday little moments. These little moments do not just happen on their own, we create them every day. Don’t focus on the material things you have or don’t have, focus on going out in the world and creating these little moments every day. You don’t have travel all around the world; you can create them wherever you are. You can create one right now!
