What makes a real team?

In 2014 I came across a young man who personified what a team worker was because everything he did was for the benefit of everyone else. It was August 2014 and I just started a new job, I have always been rubbishing with dealing with change so this was a very big deal for me, I was very anxious then I met this special young man who was a friend to everyone. He made the new employee feel welcome and he made all the old employees feel at ease. Everyone wanted to work with him, people will say if you need help go and see him, he is the best person who can help. He was a genuine team player in word and in action so much so he would stay a few hours after work to correct errors new employees made. He understood that people will make mistakes now and again and if they are not significant correct them and then speak to the person involved in private. All the people who were trained by him had a different attitude compared to other people in the organisation. He brought everyone together, he taught the team he was in to share and learn from each other. Everyone in the team have moved on but the boned and comradeship they shared still remain three years later.

After this experience my view of what a team should be was changed forever, I realised that there is a difference between working with a group of people and been part of the tem. A lot of people think they are a team when in truth they are just a group of people who work together and nothing more. A great team consists of people who complement each other skills, no one person has to be good at everything but everyone in a team has to be good at something. A team will always be there to give struggling employees the support that they need. This is true in work and in family life, if a couple is not functioning as a team the chances are that relationship will not last because we all want to feel part of something. I know some families were children and parents never do anything together, they have lived in the same house for decades but the people in that house do not really know each other. They don’t know each other weaknesses hence they cannot step in if one of their own needs help. In other words, you can work together, live in the same house, eat on the same table and sleep in the same bed but if you are not supporting each other and singing from the same hymn sheet, you are just a group of people working together, just two people living in the same house. A team is a group of people who work together and give each support, if this is not happening you are not in a team even if you have are surrounding by a hundred people. Do you ever wonder if you are a team player? Do you always think about your team? Frank
